Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

My experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs starts with stakeholder partnership and a focus on employee engagement. I provide recommendations on DEI learning development as well as best practices for engaging team members in initiatives that further the organization’s mission.

Preventing Sexual Harassment eLearning

The Preventing Sexual Harassment training was the first airline-industry specific course covering difficult situations for job roles across the industry, including corporate roles, flight attendants, pilots and ramp agents.

Design

My design approach for this course strayed from conventional sexual harassment prevention training in that I wanted to shift focus on what could happen to what team members can do to prevent unwanted behavior.

There were three key areas that comprised the bulk of the effort in the design and development of the eLearning: the identification of legal requirements, scenario writing, and character design.

Legal set about mapping out the requirements for a multi-state plan. We identified the state with the most stringent requirements and decided to design to those criteria since it had the added component of bystander intervention training.

Afterward, I sought out common sexual harassment scenarios by way of stories in news outlets and training guidelines provided by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Part of this effort involved pulling relevant news stories that occurred in aircraft and at the airport to tie them into our work group specific scenarios.

Identity-Neutral Characters

The characters in the eLearning are identity neutral but specific to job role. This allowed me to build a story around the characters and help learners feel connected to the scenarios.

Since preventing sexual harassment is a sensitive topic, it was important that learners could relate to the characters through their job role and work environment. So, I highlighted a variety of individuals in different real-world scenarios relevant to the airline industry.

Unconscious Bias eLearning

I designed and implemented this eLearning using Articulate Rise to utilize the benefits of rapid authoring.

Key components include scenario-based exercises in which the learner is asked to identify potential bias in common decision-making as well as Storyline blocks built for learners to explore the common types of unconscious bias. These interactions included audio stories and accessibility-friendly transcripts.

Custom Corporate Video

As part of the overall strategy of the diversity, equity, and inclusion program, I designed a custom inspirational video on the organizational mission that I included in the Unconscious Bias course.

My process included working with stakeholders to write the narration, recording and editing audio using Adobe Audition, and developing the video in Adobe Premiere Pro using premium assets.
